The Empty Box and Zeroth Maria, known in Japan as Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria (空ろの箱と零のマリア, lit. The Hollow Box and the Maria of Zero ) and colloquially referred to as Hakomari ( 箱マリ ) , is a Japanese light novel series written by Eiji Mikage , with illustrations by Tetsuo.
Written by Tomo Takabayashi with illustrations by Temari Matsumoto. The first novel was released in November 2000 and so far there are 22 volumes in the series. [1] 17 are considered to be main story novels and the other 5 are extras and side stories which provide background and other information to the story.
It was later acquired by Frontier Works who began publishing it with illustrations by Yamigo under their ArianRose light novel imprint on October 12, 2016. Eight volumes have been released as of August 9, 2024. [4] During their panel at Anime NYC 2019, J-Novel Club announced that they had licensed the series for English digital publication. [5]
Shueisha also simulpublishes the series in English for free on the Manga Plus app and website. [20] In February 2022, Viz Media announced that they had licensed the series in print format; the first volume was released on November 1 of the same year.
