The next census of Nigeria will be a detailed enumeration of the Nigerian population that will be the fifth national census in the country since Independence. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Censuses in Nigeria have a controversial history and the next census will be the first national census held since 2006.
The 1921 census was thus the first to cover all of Nigeria. Another census took place in 1931, but unrest in the east prevented census taking in some towns and locust swarms in the north resulted in some census staff being diverted to "anti-locust duties" instead. Due to the Second World War, no census took place in Nigeria in 1941. [1]
With the census Ordinance of 1863, the first population census in the Nigeria area was conducted in 1866. [12] Subsequent ones were held in 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. These counts were all confined to the Lagos Colony and its environs, and marked the sequential beginning of the British decennial census tradition in Nigeria.
The first official census in the Philippines was carried out by the Spanish government pursuant to a royal decree calling for the counting of persons living as of the midnight of December 31, 1877. The first door-to-door census was conducted in 1903 to fulfill Public Act 467 which was approved by the U.S. Congress in July 1902.
