Lifestyle medicine (LM) is a branch of medicine focused on preventive healthcare and self-care dealing with prevention, research, education, and treatment of disorders caused by lifestyle factors and preventable causes of death such as nutrition, physical inactivity, chronic stress, and self-destructive behaviors including the consumption of tobacco products and drug or alcohol abuse. The school was established under the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1976 by the New Jersey state legislature. Initial classes were held at what is now Robert Wood Johnson Medical School for its first two years until its campus was complete. The first class of 24 students began on September 7, 1977.
It is the first medical school to be opened in New Jersey in over 35 years and the only four-year MD-granting institution located in South Jersey. Rowan University and The Cooper Health System partnered in June 2009 to establish CMSRU to help address the physician shortage locally and nationally and to improve healthcare throughout the region.
