Ilkeston (/ ˈ ɪ l k ə s t ə n / ⓘ ILL-kis-tun) is a town located in the Borough of Erewash in Derbyshire, England, with a population of 40,953 at the 2021 census. [1] Its major industries, coal mining, iron working and lace making/textiles, have now all but disappeared.

Ilkeston was a municipal borough in Derbyshire, England from 1887 to 1974. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It was formed under the Municipal Corporations Act 1882 . The borough was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 and combined with the Long Eaton Urban District and part of the South East Derbyshire Rural District to form the new Erewash district.
