WMBG (740 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed in Williamsburg, Virginia, serving the Virginia Peninsula. WMBG is owned and operated by Gregory H. Granger. [2] It airs local news and talk, as well as a mix of adult standards, oldies, and classic hits formats. The station operates with 500 watts omnidirectional by day.
The station began operations on September 19, 1953, on UHF channel 15 as an NBC affiliate. [4] It was signed on by Peninsula Broadcasting Corporation, [5] co-owned by Hampton businessman Thomas P. Chisman and several other stockholders, along with WVEC radio (1490 AM, now WXTG; and 101.3 FM, now WWDE-FM).
Evans is located in eastern Columbia County, bordered to the northeast by the Savannah River, which forms the South Carolina state line. To the southeast is the town of Martinez. Downtown Augusta is 11 miles (18 km) to the southeast. The original community of Evans is centered on North Belair Road southwest of Washington Road .

The station signed on as WVEC in 1948. [6] It broadcast at 1050 kHz and was owned by the Peninsula Broadcasting Company. WVEC was a daytimer, transmitting with 250 watts and required to go off the air at night. In 1953, the station launched a television station, WVEC-TV. The station moved to full time broadcasting by switching to 1490 kHz.
