The portrait was commissioned by the sitter's husband, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer , a Viennese and Jewish banker and sugar producer.
The movie Woman in Gold is named after this painting. Klimt's website says that Bloch-Bauer was his mistress. He painted her at least twice.
