The little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), also known as dabchick, is a member of the grebe family of water birds. The genus name is from Ancient Greek takhus "fast" and bapto "to sink under". The specific ruficollis is from Latin rufus "red" and Modern Latin -collis , "-necked", itself derived from Latin collum "neck".
There are five recognized subspecies of least grebe, separated principally by size and color. [4] [5] T. d. brachypterus – (Chapman, 1899): is found from southern Texas and Mexico south to Panama. T. d. bangsi – (van Rossem & Hachisuka, 1937): is restricted to southern Baja California, Mexico. It is the smallest and palest of the subspecies.
