The Island of Sodor is a fictional island that is the setting for The Railway Series books by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry (and his son Christopher). It is also the setting of the Thomas & Friends television series, though it is significantly different from the island in the books. Sodor lies in the Irish Sea between Cumbria and the Isle of Man.
The Culdee Fell Railway (CFR) is Sodor's only rack railway. It climbs to the top of Sodor's highest mountain, which shares the railway's name. It is based on the Snowdon Mountain Railway in North Wales, was opened in 1900 and for many years was operated under the direction of Mr. Walter Richards, the General Manager.
Samson comes to Sodor to help out with bringing stone from the Blue Mountain Quarry. At the quarry, he asks Sir Handel about some extra trucks on a siding. Sir Handel explains that they are indeed meant to be brought to the docks, but that Samson should come back for them later.
Thomas & Friends (formerly known as Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends) is a children's media franchise created by Britt Allcroft and currently owned by Mattel.The franchise revolves around an ensemble cast of anthropomorphic steam locomotives and other vehicles, including the main protagonist Thomas the Tank Engine, who work on the Island of Sodor.
The series focuses on the adventures of a younger version of Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends, including Percy, Nia, Kana, and Diesel. Throughout the episodes, they learn many life lessons and solve problems, while going around on their daily lives doing jobs, with help from each other and the other residents and visitors of the Island of Sodor.
Two other railways on Sodor are based on real railways: The Culdee Fell Railway is based on the Snowdon Mountain Railway and the Arlesdale Railway is based on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway in Cumbria. From Duck and the Diesel Engine onwards, a number of real engines and railways were explicitly featured.
