The Shelley Memorial at University College, Oxford. [1]The Shelley Memorial is a memorial to the English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) at University College, Oxford, England, the college that he briefly attended and from which he was expelled for writing the 1811 pamphlet "The Necessity of Atheism".
Shelley was born as the fourth child of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, his namesake, and his wife, author Mary Shelley. His elder siblings, consisting of a premature girl who died at a few weeks old and a brother and a sister who died in childhood, left him as the only surviving child after his mother suffered a miscarriage in 1822.
Shelley was born in Newark, Essex County, Province of New Jersey (present-day United States), on 21 June 1731. [1] He became rich and influential due to a combination of marriages to women from other influential families and his own family's wealth. [ 2 ]
