Pantoja is situated on the eastern part of Los Alcarrizos. It borders Palmarejo-Villa Linda and Santo Domingo Norte to the north, Santo Domingo de Guzmán to the east, and Santo Domingo Oeste to the south. The Dominican Republic highway DR-1 forms the southern and western boundary of the district.
Within the municipality there are the following municipal districts (distritos municipales): Palmarejo-Villa Linda and Pantoja. [1] [2] The municipality of Los Alcarrizos is home to 336,307 inhabitants (2022), [3] making it one of the most populous municipalities in the country. It forms a northern suburb of Santo Domingo.
The provinces as the second level of political and administrative division contain at least two municipalities. The Distrito Nacional, which is neither a municipality nor a province, consists of only one municipality, Santo Domingo (Constitution: "the city of Santo Domingo de Guzmán is the Distrito Nacional" [5]).
Santo Domingo Oeste was created as municipality in 2001 by law 163-01 splitting the Santo Domingo province from the Distrito Nacional including parts of metropolitan Santo Domingo west of the DR-1 (Autopista Duarte). [4] [5]
