Seamus Ó hÉilidhe (anglicised James O'Hely, [1] Latinised Jacobus Helius; [2] died c. March 1594) was an Irish clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Tuam. He is known for his role in acquiring Spanish forces to assist the Irish in the Nine Years' War, though his mission was unsuccessful and he ultimately drowned in a shipwreck off Biscay.
In 1593, Idiáquez met with James O'Hely, the Irish Catholic Archbishop of Tuam. O'Hely had been sent to Spain to urgently obtain 8,000 to 10,000 Spanish soldiers, to supplement Irish forces in their conflict against the Tudors. The archbishop emphasised to Idiáquez the persecution the Irish were suffering as fellow Catholics.
Pedro Blanco (fl. 1588–1616) was a Spanish seaman, manservant and survivor of the Spanish Armada. After his shipwreck in Ireland, he became an aide to nobleman Hugh O'Neill and fought in the Nine Years' War. Blanco distinguished himself at various battles, and was also an interpreter and interlocutor between the Spanish and Irish.
