The 2023 Western Cape floods were a devastating series of floods affecting the Western Cape province of South Africa as a result of heavy rainfall on 24-25 September 2023. [1] The flooding resulted in at least 11 fatalities, the closure of over 200 roads, and over 80,000 people being left without electricity.
In response to the floods, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared on February 13 the State of National Disaster in seven provinces. [10] On 23 March, heavy rainfall caused flash flooding in parts of the Eastern Cape. The worst affected municipalities were Ingquza Hill, King Sabata Dalindyebo, and Port St Johns.
The authorities say at least 11 people have died as floodwaters submerge parts of the province.
