Forest Heights Academy of Excellence is an academic/visual & performing arts magnet school located on Sumrall Drive and is part of East Baton Rouge Parish Public Schools. The campus is located on 23 acres (93,000 m2) in the Wimbledon subdivision off Perkins Road in South Baton Rouge. The school has a total of 89 classrooms. The Lower School Complex consists of 30 classroom spaces, a library, a music studio and an art studio. The Brown-Holt Chapel Arts Center is the central hub for artistic expression at the school.
Christian Life Academy, and later The Church Academy, was a private, non-denominational Christian school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was founded as Christian Life Academy in 1981 and closed in 2017. The school reopened in 2018 as The Church Academy, but closed again in 2019.
The Baton Rouge Colored High School was located at the corner of Perkins Road and Bynum Street in 1913. This facility was later struck by lightning and destroyed. McKinley was the first high school established for African Americans in East Baton Rouge Parish. McKinley's first graduating class was in 1916.
Under racial segregation, Southern University students majoring in education were not allowed to gain practical teaching experience, as Student Teachers, in East Baton Rouge Parish. Practical teaching experience and passing the teaching examination were required to teach in any East Baton Rouge Parish school, black or white.
