The church was founded as Grace Community Church of the Valley as a mission of First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood.The congregation held its first public service on July 1, 1956, calling Don Householder (former associate pastor of Trinity Methodist Church and pastor of Country Church of Hollywood) to be its founding pastor. The first church was constructed at the corner of Broadway and Columbia Streets in 1839, and the first service was conducted in the new building in August of that year. For the next 21 years this was the location of Grace Church. [3] Its organist from 1923 to 1932 was Norman Coke-Jephcott. The cornerstone of the church was set on July 10, 1856.
The united church, under the leadership of the Rev. Arthur Taft, was established on the site of St. Stephen's, which today serves as the parish hall. The current Gothic Revival structure was designed by E. Donald Robb, principal of Boston-based architectural firm of Frohman , Robb and Little , designers of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
