First Congregational Church of Los Angeles is located at 540 South Commonwealth Avenue, Los Angeles, California, United States. It is a member of the United Church of Christ . [ 2 ] Founded in 1867, the church is the city's oldest continuous Protestant congregation. [ 3 ]

The land acquired for the construction of the church was formerly an orchard on the estate of actor Gary Cooper. [2] Ground was broken for the construction of the church on February 9, 1947, and the cost of the church was estimated at $150,000 with an additional $25,000 for furnishings. The church structure was completed in December 1904 at a cost of $30,000, and was opened on Christmas Day 1904. [5] At the time of the first service, the interior had not been completed. The pews were installed one week earlier, and a temporary altar was used. [5] The formal dedication ceremonies for the church occurred on February 19, 1905. [8]
