The Western Sydney Wanderers and Central Coast Mariners are the only Australian sides to have won an AFC competition, having won the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup respectively. While Adelaide United are the only other Australian side to have made a final.
The first meeting between the two teams was an A-League match on 6 October 2012, for the Western Sydney Wanderers' first competitive match. The result was a 0–0 draw in front of more than 10,000 spectators at Parramatta Stadium.
