UTM has three campuses – the main campus is in Skudai, and was the first university in the state of Johor. It has an area of 1148 hectares and is the largest public university. The second largest was Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with an area size of 1108.103 hectares. It is about 20 km north of the state capital, Johor Bahru.
It is located between Skudai and Pulai. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a 5-minute drive away from Taman Universiti, hence the name of the town. The town is dominated by civil servants (lecturers, office workers) and students from UTM. The university alone has 30,000 students who mostly live on campus but visit the town to shop.
