From January 7 to 31, 2025, a series of 14 destructive wildfires affected the Los Angeles metropolitan area and San Diego County in California, United States. [5] The fires were exacerbated by drought conditions, low humidity, a buildup of vegetation from the previous winter, and hurricane-force Santa Ana winds, which in some places reached 100 miles per hour (160 km/h; 45 m/s).

At the Palisades fire, which has burned 23,700 acres, containment was at 27% Thursday night, up from 17% a day earlier, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The fire began on July 28, 2023, on private land, [4] near the New York Mountains within the Mojave National Preserve in eastern San Bernardino County. [3] It was first observed burning in the area of Caruthers Canyon. [5] By the morning of July 29, after burning actively in the night, the fire had burned a total of 4,200 acres (1,700 ha). [6]
