MedStar Union Memorial Hospital is a non-profit, acute care teaching hospital located in the North Central section of Baltimore, Maryland. The hospital is a member of MedStar Health , a community-based network of Baltimore/ Washington, D.C. area hospitals and other health care services.
1965: The Smith Wing of Union Memorial Hospital was named in honor George Marvin Smith, MD, who served Monroe and Union County residents for 52 years and delivered more than 7,000 babies. 1968: Union Memorial Hospital is reorganized to change its status to a non-profit operating company. 1985: Union Memorial Hospital opens new acute care facility.

This hospital opened as North Arundel Hospital in 1965 with three floors and limited acute care services. In 2000, North Arundel Hospital joined into UMMS and in 2005, the name was changed to UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center to reflect the hospital's growth in size and greater regionality from expanded services.
In 1898 Franklin Square opened with 20 beds, the first hospital to open in the community of West Baltimore. In 1969 the hospital moved to the eastern Baltimore County in a new 325-bed facility.
