It is on the western edge of Điện Biên Province, of which it is the capital, and is only about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) from the border with Laos. Until the creation of the province in 2004, Điện Biên Phủ was part of Lai Châu Province .
As of 2019, it had a population of 93,850 people, covering an area of 1395.99 km², [1] making it the most populous district in the province. The district capital lies at Thanh Xương . [ 2 ] It is bordered by Sơn La province , Mường Chà district , Điện Biên Đông district , Điện Biên Phủ , and Phongsaly province of Laos.
