Jharkhand Mukti Morcha was founded by Soren, Binod Bihari Mahato and Marxist Co-ordination Committee leader A. K. Roy. The party was officially created on the birthday of Birsa Munda , a 19th-century tribal warrior from Jharkhand, who fought against British rule in the region.

The alliance consists of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Indian National Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation.
Sunil Kumar (11 January 1966 – 4 March 2007) was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India, representing the constituency of Jamshedpur in the eastern state of Jharkhand. He was General Secretary of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) political party. He was assassinated by Naxalite rebels who subscribe to Communist ideology.
