Hancock County is a county located in the East Central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,735. [1] The county seat is Sparta. [2] The county was created on December 17, 1793, and named for John Hancock, a Founding Father of the American Revolution. [3] [4]

The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Powelton in 1816; the town's municipal charter was repealed in 1901. [2] A post office was in operation at Powelton from 1804 until 1913. [3] Powelton was the location, in 1822, of a meeting of Baptists that led to the formation of the Georgia Baptist Convention.
