Following the debate, UN Women published Preventing Conflict, Transforming Justice, Securing the Peace: A Global Study on the Implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325. [22] The report covers progress and challenges, and makes recommendations for advancing the goals of the resolution across societal sectors.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, adopted on 31 October 2000, states the role women can play in conflict prevention and resolution, peace processes and post-conflict reconstruction. These realities emphasized the need to use external legal mechanisms to strengthen the implementation of SCR 1325, particularly CEDAW. The well-established mechanisms of CEDAW – the Member States compliance report and the civil society shadow reporting process were cited as possible instruments to ensure accountability.
Limited by funding strictures, the conference hosted 2000 women from forty countries. Speakers addressed economic exploitation and violence against women in its many forms. The most significant development to come out of the conference was the International Feminist Network .
The council was determined to whether disputes or a situation could lead to tensions and would make subsequent recommendations. It was also important that resolutions 1296 (2000) and 1325 (2000) concerning the protection of civilians and the role of women in armed conflict respectively were implemented.
