Erwin Technical College, sometimes known as D. G. Erwin Technical Center, is a public vocational school in Tampa, Florida. It is part of the Hillsborough County Public Schools system. It was founded in 1925. [1] Most classes and all administrative offices are located in the two-story main building.
On May 15, 2007, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places as the Old Hillsborough County High School. [ 1 ] Built in the city's Tampa Heights neighborhood in 1911 at a cost of $60,000, the old Hillsborough County High School building served what was then the county's only high school. [ 3 ]
It was founded in 1921, as a committee within the Hillsborough County Education Foundation. In 1965, it broke away to become a separate entity. [1] In 1968, the union took part in the Florida Education Association's statewide strike of teachers for more education funding and collective bargaining rights. [1] [2] [3]
HCC was one of the last community colleges to be created in Florida, founded in 1968. Only Pasco–Hernando State College, out of the 28-school Florida community college system, was founded later. In January 2008 the school opened its first residence hall, Hawk's Landing, named after the school mascot.
In the early 20th century, Hillsborough's economy was predominantly based on cigar-making and agriculture. In 2012, Hillsborough had the second-largest agricultural output among Florida's counties. [5] It is governed by the School Board of Hillsborough County, which consists of seven elected members and one superintendent, who is hired by the board. The current superintendent is Van Ayres. [6]
