The name "Hotel du Vin" was a reference to Basset's wine expertise. At the time Basset was a Master Sommelier; he went on to become a Master of Wine (1998). KSL Capital Partners purchased the Hotel du Vin chain and the Malmaison hotel chain early in 2013, before selling both hotel brands to Frasers Hospitality for £363m in 2015. [1]
Malmaison hotels are mainly located in city centres. Each hotel typically has between 70 and 200 rooms, a bar and brasserie (branded as Chez Mal), private dining rooms and meeting rooms. Some hotels also have a champagne bar, a number have gyms and three have a spa. [2]
The hotel was opened by Ken McCulloch in 1986 [3] in Number One, although it has since expanded to occupy all five houses, Number Four being the last acquired. [4] The hotel now has forty-nine bedrooms, [ 5 ] and in 2006 was acquired by the Hotel du Vin chain, which also operates Malmaison hotels.
In June 2015, Fraser Hospitality acquired the UK-based Malmaison and Hotel du Vin boutique hotel chains and have continued to operate those brands under their original names. [ 55 ] As of February 2019, the unit operates more than 150 hotels and serviced residences in over 70 cities in Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.
In 2000, he left Malmaison to work with McCulloch on the Columbus Hotel in Monte Carlo, a project in conjunction with Formula One racing driver David Coulthard. In 2004, Cook returned to Malmaison as chief executive officer. Marylebone Warwick Balfour, the group's owners, then purchased the Hotel du Vin collection of boutique hotels.
