Elamkulam Manakkal Sankaran Namboodiripad (13 June 1909 – 19 March 1998), popularly known as ' E.M.S. Namboodiripad ' or simply by his initials ' E. M. S. ', was an Indian communist politician and theorist, who served as the first Chief Minister of Kerala in 1957–1959 and then again in 1967–1969.

In 1957, the Communist Party of India defeated the Indian National Congress in the first Kerala Legislative Assembly elections and, under E. M. S. Namboodiripad , formed the first non-Congress government in independent India.
Poonthanam Nambudiri, a prominent 16th century Malayalam poet and the author of Jnanappana, and E. M. S. Namboodiripad, the first Chief Minister of Kerala, were born in Perinthalmanna. Perinthalmanna became a Grama Panchayat in 1933 under the Malabar District board. The town was later upgraded to a municipality on 10 February 1990. [5]
