The Anhalt railway built by the Berlin-Anhalt Railway Company (Anhalter Bahn, BAE) from Köthen and Dessau reached Wittenberg on 28 August 1841. On 10 September 1841, the railway was consistently in operation as far as the Anhalt station in Berlin. The first Wittenberg station was also built in 1841 on the former line to the north of the city wall.
