In my game, which seem less than optimized based on what I read here, favors rogues and fighters at low levels in single attacks and wizards in area damage. Below 5th level, the fighter hits with one attack for 1d8+3, maybe 1d10+3. Most of the fighters seem to favor AC or having an extra attack from 2-handed attacking.
To get to 11 fighter you need to limit to 9 barbarian. That means you miss out on the 10th to 20th level barbarian abilities. Some of those are good, including the extra rages, the persistent rages, and the real gem of the frenzied berserker - retaliation (which partnered with Sentinel is somewhat like getting a 3rd attack).
Aug 9, 2018. #2. Hi, I think a War Cleric/Fighter can be pretty effective. You've got pretty decent stats, here's what I would recommend: Level 1: Grab War Cleric. This gives you spells, including combat buffs, your heavy armor and weapon, and the ability to use your bonus action for an extra attack 3/day.

The basics: 1) I'm in my first 5e campaign (lots of previous DnD experience), but I'm new to this rule set. 2) Our DM is not allowing any feats. 3) My first character, the party Cleric, died at 2nd level to a brutal critical hit, so I had to re-roll. The DM brought in my new character at 2nd level to keep pace with the party.
Fighter's Grit (MP 2) - The perfect harmony of fluff and crunch, this lets a Fighter shrug off a lot of conditions that are designed to give him a tough time. Pretty cool. Pretty cool. The main thing that makes a whip unique is that it's the only one-handed melee weapon which has reach. So we want to look for a niche where it's important to be using a one-handed melee weapon, and where we get a lot of mileage out of the reach property. It also has the finesse property, which may or may not be relevant.
Two of the Fighter’s baseline abilities, Second Wind and Action Surge, recharge on a short rest, as do the Battle Master’s superiority dice. Since 5E’s Short Rests are an hour long, they tend to depend on the adventure being played and thus are somewhat unreliable. Weak against hordes of enemies.
