The quarter sawing is process for rip cutting logs into lumber. It produces quarter-sawn or quarter-cut boards. The resulting lumber can also be called radially-sawn or simply quartered. Wood cut in this way is prized for certain applications, but it will tend to be more expensive as well.
Diagonal- and stepped-cut rift-sawing is intermediate to flat-sawn and radial cut lumber. The angle of the bastard grain may differ along the width of the board or between opposing sides, and enhances the appearance of ray fleck. Flat-sawing is the quickest method, producing the least wood waste and largest possible boards from a log.
Quarter sawn and rift sawn – These terms have been confused in history but generally mean lumber sawn so the annual rings are reasonably perpendicular to the sides (not edges) of the lumber. Boxed heart – The pith remains within the timber, post or beam, with some allowance for exposure. Heart center – the center core of a log.
