The Toyota Dynamic Force engine is a family of internal combustion engines developed by Toyota under its Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) strategy. These I3 , I4 and V6 engines can be operated with petrol (gasoline) or ethanol ( flex-fuel ) and can be combined with electric motors in a hybrid drivetrain.
It is turbocharged by a Toyota CT20 Turbo (the same unit as used in the 2L-T diesel) to generate 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 206 N⋅m (152 lb⋅ft) at 4,800 rpm. This was the first turbocharged twin-cam engine built in Japan.
Other manufacturers may modify the engine after it has left the Toyota factory but the engine still keeps the original Toyota designation. The later second generation engines had this problem fixed. In Japan, there was a recall made in order to repair the first generation engines, however this does not apply to 1JZs imported into other countries. The third generation of the 1JZ-GTE was introduced around 1996, still as a 2.5-litre turbo, but with Toyota's BEAMS architecture. [2]
