Bovey Castle, formerly the Manor House Hotel, is a large early 20th-century mansion on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, near Moretonhampstead, Devon, England. It is a Grade II* listed building [ 1 ] and is now a hotel with 59 individually designed bedrooms in the hotel and 22 three-storey country lodges nearby.
The Manor House is noteworthy for several reasons throughout history. Its land is the site of a Norman castle settlement which hosted a number of Lords, the most famous of whom was Sir John Oldcastle, the figure on which the character of Sir John Falstaff is based in the late 16th-century Shakespeare play Henry IV, Part 1.
In 1929, the Great Western Railway, which now owned the line, opened the Manor House Hotel just outside Moretonhampstead. Set in 193 acres (0.78 km 2), it boasted a golf course and also attracted holidaymakers to visit Dartmoor.
