Fear Eats the Soul was loosely inspired by Sirk's All That Heaven Allows (1955). It details the vicious response of family and community to a lonely aging white cleaning lady who marries a muscular, much younger black Moroccan immigrant worker. The two are drawn to each other out of mutual loneliness.

GusGus was initially formed in 1995 as a film and acting collective. [2] The band's name refers to the 1974 German film Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (German: Angst essen Seele auf) by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, where a female character is cooking couscous for her lover, pronouncing it Gusgus. [3]
Inspired by Fassbinder's way of working, the book was written in three months and largely consists of fragments and personal reflections. Penman, a music critic, describes how he in the 1980s had a similar relationship to Fassbinder's films as he had to albums by his favourite bands.
