The system was brought by the vice chancellor, Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani. There are two semesters in an academic year – Fall and Spring. Each semester consists of 18 weeks of teaching and two exams- mid term and final term. Mid term carries 25% and the final term carries 50% of the total in any subject offered in a semester.

Later in 2014, the Federal College of Art and Design (FCAD) was converted into the Centre of Excellence in Art & Design (CEAD) by the Ministry of Education, Government of Pakistan Islamabad, and the project was handed over to the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro as its academic part.

The college was established on 22 June 1945 under Basant Singh Asumal College of Commerce & Economics, and was inaugurated by Rao Bahadur Seth Shivrattan G. Mohatta. The college was taken under the supervision of the Government of Sindh in 1948 after the establishment of Pakistan. The current building of the college was constructed in 1967. [4]
