Robert Russell Bennett was born in 1894 to a musical family in Kansas City, Missouri. [2] His father, George Bennett, played violin in the Kansas City Symphony and trumpet at the Grand Opera House, while his mother, May, worked as a pianist and teacher. She taught Bennett piano, while his father taught him violin and trumpet.

Rodgers' friend, Robert Russell Bennett, provided the orchestrations. Alfredo Antonini , a veteran with CBS, conducted and served as music director. In early March, the company moved to CBS Television Color Studio 72, [ 14 ] the first CBS-TV color studio in New York and the smallest color studio in the CBS empire at the time.
Orchestrations were by Philip J. Lang and Robert Russell Bennett under the musical direction of Jay Blackton. The cast starred Verdon and Richard Kiley. The show won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical ran in a brief US tour after closing on Broadway, starring Verdon and Kiley.
