The NZSA Waitangi Day Literary Honours are awarded each year to one or more New Zealand writers. They are an initiative of the New Zealand Society of Authors (Pen NZ Inc) Te Puni Kaituhi o Aotearoa and were first given out in 2014.
The New Zealand Society of Authors (PEN New Zealand Inc.) promotes and protects the interests of New Zealand writers. It was founded as the New Zealand PEN Centre (Poets, Essays and Novelists) in 1934. [1] It broadened its scope and became the New Zealand Society of Authors in 1994, [2] under the presidency of writer Philip Temple.
CLNZ is now jointly owned by PANZ and the New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA). [4] In 2016, following consultation with the New Zealand writing community, the Award was re-launched to provide an award for one writer each year for the following three years. [5]
It is open to writers of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama. Applicants must be members of the New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA) and need to show that they are working on a new project which has a high level of literary merit and national significance. [5] [6] The successful applicant receives a stipend of $10,000.

The NZSA Janet Frame Memorial Award was an award for New Zealand writers of poetry and imaginative fiction. Janet Frame was a member of the writers’ organisation that is now called the New Zealand Society of Authors, or NZSA (then named the NZ PEN Centre) and had been greatly helped by being awarded the Hubert Church Memorial Award in 1951 for her first book, The Lagoon and other stories. The NZSA Laura Solomon Cuba Press Prize is an award for published and unpublished New Zealand writers. It is named after New Zealand writer Laura Solomon, who died in 2019, and funded by a gift from her family. It was first awarded in 2021.
