Chanute Air Force Base is a decommissioned United States Air Force facility, located in Champaign County, Illinois, south of and adjacent to Rantoul, Illinois, about 130 miles (210 km) south of Chicago. Its primary mission throughout its existence was Air Force technical training.
Used as the trials aircraft for armament development and external fuel stores testing. Assigned to the F-15 Joint Test Force at Edwards Air Force Base, Sep 1973 to Nov 1980. Withdrawn from use and redesignated GF-15A. Was at Technical Training Center, Chanute AFB from Mar 1982 to Aug 1990. Formerly displayed at the Chanute Air Museum, IL.
One of these endeavors was the now-closed Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum, which detailed the history of Chanute Air Force Base and of aviation in general, and included a replica of Chanute's 1896 glider. The location of the base is now the Chanute Field Historic District, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Renamed Chanute Air Force Base after World War II, it was closed in 1993, but was partly reoccupied by the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum, which was permanently closed on December 30, 2015, and the Rantoul National Aviation Center. Rantoul's economy has taken a sharp decline due to the base's closing, from which it has never recovered.

In 1977 she was promoted to brigadier general and assigned as the deputy chief of staff for personnel and manpower, Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. The second XB-47 built, after 46-65. First flight 21 July 1948. Test flown at Edwards AFB. In 1954 46-65 was scrapped, making 46-66 the oldest B-47 in existence, and the only surviving XB-47. Previously displayed at the since-closed Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum at the former Chanute AFB, Illinois. Returned to Edwards AFB in 2016.
