James Irwin Brownson, Sr., D.D. (March 14, 1817 – 1899) was a clergyman and academic in Washington, Pennsylvania. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] He served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Washington, Pennsylvania , for over 50 years.
James Brownson (or sometimes Bronson) was 19 years old when he arrived at Loon Lake in 1813. Here he, his father Salmon (or Solomon), and James’s brothers took up 400 acres of land (some say 1,200).
Permission was granted and Western Theological Seminary was established. [2] Initially, the theological department within Hope College was used for theological education; but in 1884 following the synods approval the department was separated from Hope College and Western Theological Seminary was established as its own institution.
