The airport is located 31 kilometres (19 miles) northwest of downtown Dammam and is named after the former King of Saudi Arabia, Fahd ibn Abdulaziz (1921–2005). The airport serves the entire Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia and is one of the four primary international airports in the kingdom.

New Madinah airport test operations began on 12 April 2015. A Saudia domestic flight coming from Riyadh landed at 11 a.m. at the new Prince Muhammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, marking the start of the airport's test run operations. Flight SV1435 was the first to land at the airport.
General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), which is Saudi Arabia's civil aviation regulator, formally approved the airport's international status in 2011. [6] A GACA study predicted that the airport was expected to grow by 300,000 passengers per annum between 2015 and 2020. [6] Around 300,000 expatriate workers live in the area. [6]

It was renamed Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz International Airport by royal decree by King Abdullah on 5 July 2012 in memory of former Crown Prince Naif who died in June 2012. [ 4 ] [ 3 ] Prince Sultan , then crown prince and minister of defense and aviation, launched an expansion project of the royal terminal at the airport in 2003.
