Forsyth Park (formerly known as the Military Parade Ground) [1] is a large city park that occupies 30 acres (0.12 km 2) in the historic district of Savannah, Georgia, United States. The park is bordered by Gaston Street to the north, Drayton Street to the east, Park Avenue to the south and Whitaker Street to the west.
Today, the Lewis Kayton House, also known as Mansion on Forsyth Park, is a 126-room Romanesque Revival-style hotel which covers 18,000 square feet (1,700 m 2). The former Kayton mansion was converted into a lounge and restaurant that includes a cooking school. The three-story hotel was built onto the mansion with the same exterior style.
The Savannah Historic District is a large urban U.S. historic district that roughly corresponds to the pre–Civil War city limits of Savannah, Georgia. The area was declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1966, [ 1 ] [ 3 ] and is one of the largest urban, community-wide historic preservation districts in the United States. [ 4 ]

The monument was completed by the fall of 1874 and shipped from Canada to Savannah via a British schooner to avoid transporting the monument through northern states. [8] [9] The ship arrived in Savannah on December 25, 1874, but an issue with customs caused a delay in the transportation of the monument to the park. [8]
