The first hotel, still operating at 865 North Military Highway in Norfolk, was built for $275,000. Its daily rate for rooms was $7 single, $9 double, and $11 for four. Tarbutton sold the chain, which had 306 locations, in 1983 for $836 million. He had begun to change the name on all locations to Econo Lodge in the latter 1970s.
Its competitors include America's Best Value Inn, Days Inn, Econo Lodge, and Super 8 Motels. In 1999, Motel 6 launched Studio 6 Extended Stay, hotels with suites that are designed for longer stays and feature kitchenettes. In 2000, Motel 6 went international by opening its first location outside the U.S. in Burlington, Ontario, Canada.
The Thunderbird Motel was an American Indian-themed motel that was built in 1962 along Interstate 494 and 24th Ave., in Bloomington, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. It is an example of post-war American culture. Prior to its demolition, it was part of the Ramada franchise.
It was founded as Interstate Inn in 1972 by David Stauffacher. The first one was located on East Towne Boulevard in Madison. Stauffacher changed the motel's name to Exel Inn in 1974 after he was unable to get a copyright for the chain's original logo, which incorporated the Interstate Highway System shield. [1]
