The Bureau of Labor Standards was an agency of the U.S. Department of Labor from 1934 until 1971. It was the direct predecessor of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The unit was formed as the Division of Labor Standards in November 1934, and renamed the Bureau of Labor Standards in 1948. [1] [2]
The agency was originally formed as the Bureau of Labor-Management Reports in 1959. It was renamed the Labor-Management Services Administration in 1963, and the Office of Labor-Management Standards in 1984. [4]
The Wage and Hour Division was created with the enactment of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938. The Division is responsible for the administration and enforcement of a wide range of laws which collectively cover virtually all private and State and local government employment.
