Modern RADIUS servers can do this, or can refer to external sources—commonly SQL, Kerberos, LDAP, or Active Directory servers—to verify the user's credentials. RADIUS Authentication and Authorization Flow. The RADIUS server then returns one of three responses to the NAS: 1) Access Reject, 2) Access Challenge, or 3) Access Accept. Access Reject
FreeRADIUS is a modular, high performance free RADIUS suite developed and distributed under the GNU General Public License, version 2, and is free for download and use.The FreeRADIUS Suite includes a RADIUS server, a BSD-licensed RADIUS client library, a PAM library, an Apache module, and numerous additional RADIUS related utilities and development libraries.
Current AAA servers communicate using the RADIUS protocol. As such, TIA specifications refer to AAA servers as RADIUS servers. While at one point it was expected that Diameter was to replace RADIUS, that has not happened. Diameter is largely used only in the mobile (3G/4G/5G) space, and RADIUS is used everywhere else.
RADIUS is a standard for dedicated authentication servers. Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003 include the Internet Authentication Service (IAS), an implementation of RADIUS server. IAS supports authentication for Windows-based clients, as well as for third-party clients that adhere to the RADIUS standard.
MS-CHAP is used as one authentication option in Microsoft's implementation of the PPTP protocol for virtual private networks. It is also used as an authentication option with RADIUS [2] servers which are used with IEEE 802.1X (e.g., WiFi security using the WPA-Enterprise protocol).
The NPAS server role includes Network Policy Server (NPS), Health Registration Authority (HRA), and Host Credential Authorization Protocol (HCAP). In Windows Server 2003, IAS is the Microsoft implementation of a Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) server.
RADIUS had issues with reliability, scalability, security, and flexibility. RADIUS cannot deal effectively with remote access, IP mobility, and policy control. The Diameter protocol defines a policy protocol used by clients to perform Policy, AAA, and resource control. This allows a single server to handle policies for many services. [1]
RadSec is a protocol for transporting RADIUS datagrams over TCP and TLS. The RADIUS protocol is a widely deployed authentication and authorization protocol. The supplementary RADIUS Accounting specification [1] also provides accounting mechanisms, thus delivering a full AAA protocol solution. However, RADIUS has two substantial shortcomings.
