The impact factor (IF) or journal impact factor (JIF) of an academic journal is a scientometric index calculated by Clarivate that reflects the yearly mean number of citations of articles published in the last two years in a given journal, as indexed by Clarivate's Web of Science.
The impact factor relates to a specific time period; it is possible to calculate it for any desired period. For example, the JCR also includes a five-year impact factor, which is calculated by dividing the number of citations to the journal in a given year by the number of articles published in that journal in the previous five years. While these journals still did not receive an impact factor until the next year, they did contribute citations to the calculation of other journals' impact factors. [4] [5] In July 2022, Clarivate announced that journals in the ESCI obtain an impact factor effective from JCR Year 2022 first released in June 2023. [6]
The Australian Political Studies Association (APSA) ranked academic publishers in 2007, taking into consideration both book and journal publication. [12] By 2022 this was replaced by a ranking of journal titles only.
