The games star Mickey Mouse and (depending on the game version) either Minnie Mouse or Donald Duck, who must defeat Pete. The gameplay is similar amongst all games in the series: the player must move as in a typical platform game, defeating enemies either by jumping on them or by grabbing and throwing blocks at them.
Players can choose to be one of four characters (Mickey, Donald, Goofy, or Minnie) to play out the story; each character has a different storyline. It can be played under Magical or Updown Tetris. The last three stages pit the player's character against a Weasel and the Big Bad Wolf before facing the game's main antagonist, Pete.
The game takes place in the Kingdom, a place primarily based on Magic Kingdom and Disneyland. Mickey Mouse is the protector of the Kingdom. When Maleficent casts an evil spell on the Kingdom, ridding it of all its powerful magic, the players have to help it get back, creating their own park.

The game opens with Mickey sleeping in a chair in his living room. Once the player has pressed one of the keys numbered one to nine, Mickey will count that number of sheep before waking up and announcing that he will throw a surprise birthday party for one of his friends: Goofy, Daisy Duck, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck, Horace Horsecollar, Clarabelle Cow, Chip and Dale, or Gus Goose.
