Scarritt was born on April 14, 1821, in Edwardsville, Illinois, [1] the seventh of twelve children. His parents, Nathan and Latty, traveled from New Hampshire on wagon. As a child, he worked on a farm in Alton, Illinois, and didn't receive a proper education.
The magazine was the first dedicated to the country look, and the focus was originally on Early American and period homes. In addition to country homes, regular features included home plans, inns, real estate listings, kitchens, cooking and folk remedies.
The newspaper was founded as the Madison Intelligencer in 1862; it was a Democratic newspaper. [1] [2] [3] It was published by James R. Brown and Henry C. Barnsback. [1]In 1868, it became the Edwardsville Intelligencer.
While affiliated with the McCombs School of Business, Gau held the George S. Watson Centennial Professorship in Real Estate and the J. Ludwig Mosle Centennial Memorial Professorship in Investments and Money Management. [3] From 2002 to 2008, Gau was the ninth person to serve as dean of the McCombs School of Business.
He was released in 1970 and went to work at his sister's hardware store, then as a car salesman and finally as a real estate agent in Granite City until his death at the age of 82 in Edwardsville, Illinois. [3] [4]
