    If you mean that the comma in the total is directly below the thousand's place in the addends, yes, that's intentional, because maybe where there are a lot of little 4-digit addends, adding to a big 5- or 6-digit number, you might not want the clutter of commas in all the addends, but want the comma in the sum.
