Vega Baja was originally known as Vega-baxa del Naranjal de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Vega Baja of the Orange Grove of Our Lady of the Rosary). Cibuco is one of the rivers that goes through Vega Baja, and is a variation of the name Sebuco , who was a chief or Cacique Taíno of the region.
