I appreciate the link to your source for the name. The first president of Hannibal & St. Joseph was Charles E. Kearney. Since the town owes its existence to the Hannibal & St. Joseph, it would seem logical the town was named for him rather than some place in Nebraska (which involved a spelling name change itself).
