Gatton–Clifton Road is a continuous 63.1 kilometres (39.2 mi) road route in the Lockyer Valley and Toowoomba regions of Queensland, Australia. Most of the road is signed as State Route 80. Gatton–Clifton Road (number 313) is a state-controlled road, part regional and part district.
The Gatton area was explored by Major Edmund Lockyer in 1825. A settlement known as Gatton was gazetted in 1855. [7] [8] The name Gatton is taken from the village of Gatton in Surrey, England. [3] The post office opened 1 January 1866, with Frederick Lloyd, a dairyman, as the first postmaster. [9]
The University of Queensland Gatton Campus is located on the Warrego Highway, just east of the town of Gatton. It comprises two distinct areas: the main campus at Lawes, approximately 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) east of Gatton, and the Darbalara Farms, located approximately 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the south east of the main campus.
Early forms of Gatton's name include Gatatune (recorded between 871 and 889) and Gatetuna (in 1121). The name is thought to mean "goat-farm". [2] This may indicate either that the township had a specialised function (goat-farming) within the economy of a much larger Anglo-Saxon estate; or that it was required to make a specialised tribute obligation, in the form of goats, to its overlord.
Gatton Town Hall. Gatton Town Hall is a Grade II*-listed ornamental garden temple. [28] Attributed to the architect, Robert Taylor, it consists of a pedimented roof, supported by six cast iron Doric columns. [4] It is the place where, prior to 1832, the tiny electorate of the Gatton rotten borough voted in their two members of Parliament.
The land of which Westcourt is situated was initially a dairy farm, which was subdivided in 1886. [5] Westcourt, located east of the suburb Mooroobool, was named as a locality on 1 September 1973 and designated as a suburb on 7 June 2002. [2] [6] Local sportsground, Jones Park, is named after two brothers Jack Jones and Henry Ernest (Harry) Jones.
In the north of the locality is the 184-hectare (450-acre) Darbalara Farm operated by the University of Queensland's Gatton campus).The university's School of Veterinary Science uses the farm to maintains a Droughtmaster herd and other beef cattle as part of its teaching and research
Lawes is located on the eastern outskirts of the town of Gatton. The Warrego Highway enters the locality from the north-east (College View) and exists to west (Gatton) through the northern part of the locality. Further to the south, the Main Line railway enters the locality from the south-east (Forest Hill) and exits to the west (Gatton). [3]
