Count Sam Dracula, commonly known as Grandpa, [a] is a fictional character from the American sitcom The Munsters, originally played by Al Lewis. [1] He is an undead vampire and the doting, irritable, and sarcastic father of Lily Munster. [2] The role was later played by Howard Morton in the 1980s television series The Munsters Today.
Al Lewis (born Abraham Meister; April 30, 1923 – February 3, 2006) was an American actor and activist, best known for his role as Grandpa on the television series The Munsters from 1964 to 1966 and its film versions. He previously also co-starred with The Munsters 's Fred Gwynne in the television show Car 54, Where Are You? from 1961–1963.
In episode 2, "My Fair Munster," Mrs. Cribbins falls in love with Herman after he accidentally consumes a potion concocted by Grandpa; at the end of the episode she and the mailman Warren Bloom (portrayed by John Fiedler), who is also wary of the Munsters, accidentally consume the same potion and fall in love with each other.
